Barn of ‘Gulbji’ farm restored

The barn in 'Gulbji' farm of Bebrene parish (at the Information centre of Dviete floodplain nature park) was restored during 2013 within the project 'Restoration of barn for maintenance of ancient traditions and placement of boats', supported by the European fisheries fund (EFF) and implemented by 'Dvietes senlejas pagastu apvienība' (Union of Parishes of Dviete Valley).

It is planned to use the barn both for maintenance and popularization of ancient barn traditions and keeping of boats, used in flood tourism. Boats were placed in a shed before, occupying room, needed for hay. Ancient fishing gear will be also placed in the barn, once used for fish catching during spring floods. There will be also bins, boxes for grain and other ancient objects in the barn. Attic of the barn will be suitable for staying for night during summer.

Building of the new barn took place in autumn 2013. On November 30 the barn was opened. More than 70 people, including the folklore group of Bebrene ‘Ritam’, took part in the opening event.

Some finishing works still are needed to complete the restoration.
