New bird-watching tower opened in Dviete floodplain
A seminar "Good examples in management of specially protected nature areas and raising public awareness in Dviete floodplain" took place on August 28, 2013 in the Dviete floodplain nature park, organised by Nature Conservation Agency. Dviete LIFE+ project was represented by Ilze Priedniece (Latvian Fund for Nature).
Participants listened to several presentations in the information centre of Dviete floodplain (“Gulbji” farm): Benita Štrausa, society „Dvietes senlejas pagastu apvienība", sheared experience on management of the nature park and raising public awareness, Ilze Priedniece informed about performed and planned activities of Dviete LIFE+ project, Jolanta Bāra, manager of the LIFE+ project EREMITA MEADOWS – about activities of EREMITA MEADOWS project, highlighting actions in Dviete floodplain. At the end of the seminar Valērijs Seilis, director of the Department of Nature Tourism Infrastructure, Nature Conservation Agency, and coordinator of the EU Cohesion Fund project “The formation of the informative infrastructure on reduction of the anthropogenic load in the Natura 2000 sites”, informed about the progress of the project.
After discussions and dinner participants of the seminar went to the northern coast of the Skuķu lake (Dviete parish) to open a bird-watching tower, built within the EU Cohesion Fund project “The formation of the informative infrastructure on reduction of the anthropogenic load in the Natura 2000 sites”. Skuķu lake and, particularly, small areas of open water, remaining during low water level periods in the vicinity of the tower, are nicely visible from the tower, increasing its suitability for bird-watching. Also open grasslands, restored within the Dviete LIFE+ project at the northern coast of Skuķu lake, can be seen from the tower.
