Review on bird watching excursion
A bird watching excursion took place in Dviete floodplain nature park on May 4, 2013, organised within the framework of educational lessons of Dviete floodplain information centre within the LIFE+ project. 44 persons took part, including inhabitants and land-owners of local perishes (Bebrene, Dviete and Pilskalne), as well as interested people from other parts of Latvia - Rīga, Salaspils, Aizkraukle, Viesīte and Kalsnava perish). Excursion was lead by Edmunds Račinskis, LIFE+ project manager.
After having a look on the floodplain from the outlook platform, constructed last autumn within the LIFE+ project in Putnu sala, participants went for a walk in the vicinity, visiting the grazing area, where it was possible to see also a newly-born foal. After the walk, participants went to the left bank of Dviete river by bus, making stops in several waterfowl gathering sites. Although the flood waters had started to fall already, water level was comparatively high, hence there were no shallow waters, suitable for waterfowl, and number of observed bird species and individuals was not high. Participants of the excursion watched White-fronted Geese, a Barnacle Goose, Shovelers, Crested Grebes, Lapwings and other birds.
